A quite ironic Satyajit Ray's masterpiece.

Set in 1856, Shatranj Ke Khiladi follows two aristocrats of Lucknow, Mirza Sajjad Ali and Mir Roshan Ali, whose obsession with chess blinds them to the political storm brewing around them. While they spend their days playing the game in isolation, the British East India Company, led by General Outram (Richard Attenborough), plots the annexation of the kingdom of Awadh. Nawab Wajid Ali Shah (Amjad Khan), the poetic and peace-loving ruler, is gradually stripped of his power.

Satyajit Ray weaves this dual narrative — the idle nobility’s detachment and the empire’s calculated strategy; into a sharp commentary on complacency and colonial manipulation.

With lush period detail, understated humor, and poignant irony, Shatranj Ke Khiladi becomes both an intimate portrait of obsession and a grand allegory of India’s political downfall.
